Adhan allowed in Cologne
In Germany, where more than 4.5 million Muslims live, the adhan permit has been issued.
It has been announced that for two years, 5 minutes long call to prayer is allowed in mosques from 12:00 to 15:00 on Fridays. While it was stated that the call to prayer will be made from 35 mosques in Cologne, it was stated that Germany’s largest mosque, the Cologne Central Mosque, is among these mosques.
“Allowing a muezzin to call for prayer is a sign of respect,” said Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker. Reker said that the bells from the Cologne Cathedral, one of the largest Gothic churches in Northern Europe, will accompany the call to prayer. “This shows us that diversity is tolerated and lived in Cologne,” Reker said.
The city administration stated that muezzins can chant the call to prayer at a certain volume, and reminded that those living in the region will be informed in advance.
